The Cultural Capital Introspection Program
Sorry No Rooms Available residenc
are pleased to present the results of the project and workshops of New York artist Daniel Bozhkov ” Clothes for Crossing a Medium Size River” Online workshops took place from September 21 to November 21, 2020. The show and performance took place on November 21, 2020.

Clothes for Crossing a Medium Size River is a fashion line of restructured second hand clothes. It was created through a number of discussions and a series of walks in  the city of Uzhhorod, Ukraine, by Uzhhorod 7+, a temporary collective, consisting of  the New York-based artist Daniel Bozhkov, and the artists, designers and filmmakers  from Uzhhorod: Petro Ryaska, Anton Humenyuk, Anetta Light, Attila Hazhlinsky,  Anastasia Kostiv, Tomi Hazslinszky.

Uzhhorod – the capital of Transcarpathian region of Ukraine – is a city that has  frequently changed hands in the past between The Kingdom of Hungary, The Austro Hungarian Empire, Czechoslovakia, and Soviet Union. In contemporary Ukraine, it has  become a stop on a “reverse Silk Road”, a portal through which vast amounts of  second-hand clothes pass through, starting their journey in Western, Northern and  Central Europe: Switzerland, Sweden, Great Britain, Germany, Hungary and Poland,  and spreading deep into Ukraine.

Daniel Bozhkov could not travel to Uzhhorod due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but he  was able to mentally arrive and walk through the streets. With the help of the group, he  oriented himself in a place he never visited before, by locating all twenty four second hand clothing stores that exist in the city.

Uzhhorod 7+ has been discussing topics ranging from the logging industry and  smuggling across the border, to the endangered Black Stork (Ciconia nigra), recently  spotted in the river Uzh, near the elegant district of Maly Galagov, built in the 1930s by  Czech Modern architects and proposed as a UNESCO heritage site. These topics have  crystalized into characters that became the base for designing garments: Stone Frogs  Skipper, Five-in-One, Modern Ghost of Maly Galagov, Black Stork, Suit for  Waiting, Promenade Couple.

The seventh garment, Suit for Crossing the Other River (Spiritual Crossing), is  meant for crossing a different river with the name Uzh. Located 800 km from  Uzhhorod, it flows through the city of Pripyat, where on Saturday, April 26, 1986, at the  No. 4 reactor in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, occurred the Chernobyl Nuclear  Disaster.

Clothes for Crossing a Medium Size River aim to cross the river many times and not leave a trace.

Second Hand Shop #2( Euro Sezony/Euro Seasons)

Name and location
It is Euro Sezoni located on 33 Hrushevskoho Street

Neighborhood history and contemporary life

This shop is located in the center of Hrushevskoho street, which is a big traffic street  that is located in a heart of the so called sleeping area “New block”. This area was  mainly built in a Soviet times. One side of the street is filled with 5-storied residential  buildings so-called “Khruschovkas” cheap housings that were built in a Khruschov  period. The other side is one-storied block. This is not a bad area, but bad  infrastructure because of lack of care make everything here look depressing. Although  there are few very nice restaurants and cafes in this area that liven up local social life.

Shop size and architecture

Shop is located in the soviet modernist one-storied building which was purposefully  planned as a shopping place. Its a row of several shops that connected to the  residential buildings. Its a frame building which is a concrete carcass covered with  concrete panels. Passing through between these shops you are entering in the  residential courtyard. In front of this shop there is a large open space which is partially  a parking, road, green square and the bus stop. Asphalt is very destroyed here and  chaotic car parking makes it look messy. This area got a lot of potential if everything  just would be fixed properly.

Shop is one large square hall, more or less good looking. Clothes are located around  the perimeter and in the center, usually in two rows one above the other. There is a old  original tiling on the floor and a modern hanging ceiling above.

Specificity and peculiarities:
It’s an average second hand shop with a lot of customers due to its location in the heart of the residential area. Bad infrastructure outside makes this place a little bit depressing. Though this is a common mood for such areas all over Ukraine and with a time its becoming inspiring.

Second Hand Shop #11( Euro Sezony/Euro Seasons)
Name and location
It is Euro Sezoni located on 15 Shwabska Street, between Lermontova and Bichna Streets.
Neighborhood history and contemporary life
This is almost a center of Shwabska which is one of the main shopping and business streets. It is also one of the main traffic routes that connects center through Mynaiska street with New Block. Because most of the buildings and infrastructure on this street were built randomly (nothing to look at) – it is not very pleasant to walk or promenade on this street, though it’s got few coffee shops and restaurants. Around this shop particularly there are no interesting places to rewind. For Uzhhorod people – extra 100 meters to walk is sometimes a hard routine.
There are few other second hand shops closer to Petefi street and people often visit them all for shopping.
In a soviet times the street was pedestrian and had no connection to Mynaiska street and was meeting a nice green square. In the 90s on its place was built huge Orthodox Church, which completely changed the look of this part of the city.

Shop size and architecture
The shop is located in one of the off-style 3-floor building that was built in last decade. It is situated on the first floor whic. The single hall is around 100-150 square meters large and it’s pretty nice and accurate (fairly new). Clothes racks are not very close to each other so people can feel quite comfortable here.
Merchandise
New clothes arrive on wednesday. They come mostly from Switzerland and cover the full range of clothes by size and gender.
Euro Seasons always offer a chance to find some very modern items, designer and outdoor clothes, nice vintage.
Prices:
Tuesday 199₴
Wednesday 169₴
Thursday 139₴
Friday 109₴
Saturday 79₴
Sunday 49₴
Monday 19₴
The prices range from 199₴ first day to 23₴ last day.
Specificity and peculiarities:
This is quite a nice shop. It is not very large so the choice of clothes is limited, but the quality is predominantly good, staff is kind and it is actually calming to be here.

Second Hand Shop #13 KOMOD

Name and location
Komod is the one of the second Hands located on the Shwabska Street, close to the Petefi square. It is stuck between Silpo food supermarket and another second-hand Econom Class.
Neighborhood history and contemporary life.
Shop size and architecture
The shop is situated on the two first floors of the 4 floor of commerce building. The architectural style is some sort of modern. The expensive metal forgings which is the often choice for rich vernacular design in Ukraine are the one eye catcher on the cold flat facage. These forgings are extensively used in interior for stair railings, but combined with color glass. Beautiful but strange choice for place like this. Inside forgings are used for hanging scarves, belts, carpets, empty hangers. A lot of these commerce buildings have unfinished details in interiors, like openings in ceilings, some cords hanging from the walls, lights working only partially. This represents one of the traits of local people which if it is not necessary it can be left as it is.
Merchandise
First day is Tuesday. The clothes here are from Eastern Europe, usually not very good quality, old and used.
It is mostly unusable clothes which are old but not so old to be vintage. The shop wins of the location, people usually go here after checking in Silpo or other shops.

Prices:

Tuesday – 219₴ – quite expensive for the quality
Wednesday – 184
Thursday – 154
Friday – 119
Saturday – 89
Sunday – 54
Monday – 24
Specificity and peculiarities
Its a bit dark place, with not very good clothes, you usually don’t want to spend a lot of time here. Though it is possible in places like these to find some very strange, out of place clothes. And there is a lot of stuff, especially for women.

There are 5 more second hand shops in this area (100-200m)
Bus stops, shops and offices are on this street too

Neighborhood history and contemporary life
This is an Old Town, but eclectic style. Transport nodes and busy traffic created a merchandise area. There is an “Agnessa” shop above with hairdressing/beauty tools and supplies. A lot of cars park here. People walk near this shop from the grocery market to the bus stops, so it is pretty popular and crowded. Driving school is near in the inner yard. A lot of people walk here because of the bus stops and market nearby. Also there are 4 more second hands in a row on this street

Second Hand Shop #21

Name and location
Euro Seasons is located on Fedyntsya in the front of central grocery market (people call it Green Market)

Neighborhood history and contemporary life
This shop is situated on the second floor of the mall called RIO PLAZA There are few cafes, zoo shop and 24/7 shop nearby. This part of the old town was an outdoor market ~ 15 years ago. People used to sell here everything – food, clothes, shoes, tapes, magazines, homemade wine etc. Now there is a huge mall called “LUXOR”, parking and new or renovated buildings with shops, offices, gym halls… very LUX! Green Market works only inside, but people from villages still sell their harvest and organic food on the sidewalks or benches nearby. They don’t have enough money to rent a place inside or to sell something everyday

Shop size and architecture
This is the biggest second hand in Transcarpathia, it takes ~200m2. It is pretty bright. Dozens of racks are always full with clothes and shoes. When they sell too much clothes, they divide the space of the shop with curtains, so it always look like “full” Merchandise
The new shipment of clothes comes on Thursday and they empty out by Wednesday. The clothes and shoes come from mostly Germany and are in pretty good condition. It is easy to find some brand or vintage stuff here, fake glasses, accessories, nice shoes. Also there are LUX second hand clothes. They are divided from other stuff by yellow hangers. Of course these clothes are more expensive

Prices: all clothes/ LUX
Thursday – 199
Friday – 179/498
Saturday – 149/460
Sunday – 119/412
Monday – 89/366

Wednesday – 23/278

Specificity and peculiarities
This store is pretty popular, a lot of people are always inside. 3-4 workers are always on shift, sometimes they check how much clothes you take to the cabin. It is always clean here and crowded. I think it is one of the most popular shops in the area called “Koryatovycha”. Really a lot of clothes – modern and good looking.

The Modern Ghost of Maly Halahov

In search for bygone elegance, he can be seen walking endlessly, day and night, on the streets of Maly Halahov – an area in Uzhhorod that is considered for UNESCO historical heritage site status. The crumbling house on #34 Mytna Street at the corner of Bozhenka, the door at #16 Dovzhenka, and the curved-pattern pavement at the turning from Lomonosova onto Ferentsa Rakotzi, often echo his steps most audibly.

Black Stork (Ciconia nigra)

On July 12, 2018, this rare endangered bird, listed in Ukraine’s Red Book,  was seen hunting in the river Uzh, between the Pedestrian Bridge and the  Masaryk Bridge. Experts say that the main reasons for reduction of the  species population is deforestation, and reclamation of forest lands. The  forests usually inhabited by black storks are cut down and sold illegally to  the Swedish company Ikea. The storks are also starving because of the  pollution of rivers, plastic dams prevent the flow of small fish that feed the  storks. In Ukraine, the number reaches 400-450 pairs, 30-40 of which live  in Transcarpathia.

They have a “dog” on wheels and matching hoodies. They live in the  perimeter defined by the Pedestrian Bridge, 500-meter stretch of the  Linden Alley on both banks of the river, and the Theater Square. The clothes are specially fitted, and even when they  are worn separately, they carry the possibility for a side hug.

Five-in-One

This garment packs five different occupational possibilities that merge into each other: Migrant, Bokorash, Cosmonaut, Smuggler and Swimmer. Goods are smuggled through the European Union border (just a few kilometers from the center of Uzhhorod) via an underground tunnel. A person who sends logs downstream is known as bokorash. According to a local legend, Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin, the Soviet Air Force pilot and cosmonaut who became the first human to fly into outer space, fell in love with bokorash’s daughter while visiting the picturesque Kvasy in the mountains (224.8 km from Uzhhorod via H09). The restaurant Gagarin ta Bokorash was revamped, and relaunched, taking into consideration this beautiful past.
